Upper Surgery Patient Experience Survey
1. Who is conducting this survey?
This survey is conducted by Trans Care BC, a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). We coordinate and monitor gender-affirming care, including surgeries, in BC.
2. Why are you conducting the survey?
We want to learn about people's experiences with gender-affirming chest and breast construction surgeries. This information will help us improve care for people in the future.
3. What am I being asked to do?
You would be asked 20 questions about your recent surgery. You could skip any question you did not want to answer. It would take about 5 minutes to complete the survey.
4. Do I have to complete the survey?
No. Participation is voluntary. There are no consequences if you choose not to participate.
5. What will you do with my responses?
Trans Care BC (PHSA) will share a summary of survey results with surgeons and surgical facilities. Individual survey responses will not be provided to surgeons or surgical facilities.
6. What kind of personal information will I be asked to provide?
You will be asked to share your gender, the type of surgery you had, your surgeon's name, and the facility name. You can provide more information in the comment box. You should only tell us things that you are comfortable having us share with your surgeon and staff. You have the option of giving us your contact information so that we can follow-up with you. We will not share your personal contact information outside of Trans Care BC.
7. How will you protect my personal information?
Your personal information is protected by our privacy law in BC called the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). For this survey, your identifiable information is collected under section 26 (e) of FIPPA. We will only use the information you share to help improve surgical care in BC or to follow up with you directly about your care. Your responses will be stored on a secure computer server. Only Trans Care BC staff and the technical support team at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute will have access to your responses. We only intend to identify you if you provide your contact information in the final question of the survey. If you do not wish to be identified, please do not share information that might identify you or someone else in your responses to open ended questions.
8. What are the risks and benefits of participating?
We will do our best to protect your privacy. It is possible that your surgeon or staff may be able to identify you from the information you share, especially in locations where few patients are provided this care. You may not directly benefit from participating. Future patients are likely to benefit from improvements to surgical care that come from this survey.
9. Can I withdraw from the survey if I change my mind?
You may contact Trans Care BC at any time if you want to withdraw your consent. However, it will only be possible to withdraw your consent if: (1) you provided your contact information and (2) we have not yet shared the survey results with surgeons and surgical facilities.
10. What if I have questions?
If you have questions, you can contact Lorraine Grieves the Provincial Director of Trans Care BC.
